Charleston On My Mind (Guest Post)

Today I am taking over my dear friend Mary Katherine's blog while she is enjoying the ever so beautiful Italy with her hubby! MK is one of my favorite bloggers AND blogging friends for a number of reasons. Not only is she super sweet, but she has great style (check out some of my favorite outfits she has worn here, here, and here), and is as precious as one could be! I am so jealous excited for all the fun MK is having and I can't wait for her to get back so I can read all about her wonderful trip! So in the meantime, hop on over to her blog to show her some love and read my post on all things Charleston, SC!

5 on Friday

Happy Friday, everyone! In a few hours I will be making my way to Greensboro to visit my family for the weekend and I'm excited to be back home in the house that I grew up in for a few days. Oh and I'm going to try to make this a social media free weekend so wish me luck! So do y'all remember when I wrote a blog post about Lent earlier this week? If you missed it, don't worry you can catch up on it here. This week I've been trying to think more heavily about what I can give up and what I can take on in regards to the 40 days of Lent. As of today, I have tried to make more of an effort to not watch TV before going to sleep and making sure to take my makeup off every night. For today's post, I've come up with five things that remind me of what I should be doing to celebrate all that God has given up for us. Maybe they will light a little flame in your heart that will shine brighter then before. Maybe you will get some ideas of what YOU can be doing differently. Maybe they won't do anything at all but are fun to check out. Whatever this post does for you, I hope it's at least positive and worthwhile.

This little girl is named Emily James and she has a little heart of gold. Watch what she does and has to say when her parents suggest that she should get her first haircut (at the age of three) and should donate some of it to kids who have cancer. Each and every one of us should have this kind of outlook towards those who are suffering.
TWO
Do you judge a book by it's cover? If so then you are like most of us. It's hard not to do it, and I have caught myself a number of times and had to stop what I was doing to remind myself of the reasons why what I was doing was wrong. Perfect example happened yesterday when I was exploring THE EVERYGIRL and saw this article on a lady's Washington DC Apartment tour. Not only was her apartment head-to-toe amazing and totally decorated how I would want it (and very colorful and full of life), but this lady happens to also be a U.S. Army Captain, works at the Pentagon as a Policy Officer and runs a lifestyle and interior design blog called Life with a Dash of Whimsy. I've never seen that kind of career combo but it totally works for her!
THREE

Have you gone ahead and entered the giveaway for the spring "package" that a group of my sweet blog friends and I have created for you all to enjoy? I am giving away something so that you can gain something! Pretty sweet right ;) If you haven't entered go do that right now!
FOUR

Pentatonix. This group can SING and when they play this song, I melt in my seat it's that good! When the song talks about "saying something", I try to relate that back to my friends and family. When I am upset, I don't always like to say much. And often times, Will and I might get in a fight because neither one of us can read each others minds. So now every time I hear "say something" in this song, that's what I think of! How do you think they did with this song?
FIVE
Due to some financial issues (please tell me I'm not the only one who has had them) Will and I have decided that going to NYC this April was just not the right choice. Instead, we have decided on an NEW location and I can't wait to share that information with within the next week or two!

Lent

Not only have Wednesdays been nicknamed "hump day", but this particular Wednesday is extra special. Today is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent! Ash Wednesday, in many Christian traditions, is a day of reflection and repentance. As you go about your day, you might notice some individuals styling a cross drawn on their foreheads in ash. In all honesty, I haven't ever really participated or taken Lent seriously and have been questioned by many on what Lent is all about. And so, the thought of having a blog post dedicated to this topic not only seemed to be appropriate, but I hope it to be informative and a enjoyable read.

What is Lent?
Lent is "marked" by a period of time that starts with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday celebrates the start of Jesus' 40-day journey of fasting and temptation in the dessert (see Matthew 4:1-11). Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus' resurrection from the grave after his crucifixion.

How do individuals celebrate Lent?
This really varies from person to person and from church to church. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate, and it certainly is not required to take part in! In the past, I have gone to worship services dedicated to the Holiday but have never been successful at giving anything up...something that is typically done by many over Lent.

What are some things individuals give up?
Again, this differs for everyone and can be anything as little as giving up soda and sweets or as big as taking away the use of social media (Pinterest and Blogging being the hardest for me).

Do you have to give something up?
No! Not at all! I've had friends who instead of giving something up, decided to challenge themselves by volunteering in the community and dedicate a particular person to pray for regularly.
Why do you want to celebrate Lent?
The choice to celebrate Lent is a personal one. I want to partake in it to help focus my heart and mind on Jesus and all that he went through during the days leading up to Easter.

How do you plan to celebrate?
I struggle with giving things up, especially if it's only for a brief period of time. I've tried the whole dieting over Lent and sometimes never lasted the full 40 days. I personally don't feel dieting for Lent to be realistic. Maintaining our health should be a lifestyle that we should want to commit to long-term; eating healthy, exercising, etc. So instead of trying to stick to a strict diet, I think I would benefit better by doing RAK's (Random Acts of Kindness).

What are some ideas of RAK's I could do?
This one is easy for me to answer! There are SO many ways to serve others throughout your day-to-day schedule and can be as easy or as challenging as you want them to be. And if you don't want to stick to doing the same thing for 40-days, you can switch it up with a variety of options.
  • Pray for someone you wouldn't consider to be a friend. This can be someone who frustrates or opposes you. Also pray for yourself, that you would show them the same kind of grace that Christ has shown for us.
  • Clean out your closet and donate unwanted items to Goodwill.
  • Write a thank-you note to your mailman.
  • Take baked goodies to a local fire station for the firefighters to enjoy.
  • Give jewelry that you no longer wear to someone who has child to use to play dress up with.
  • Leave a Bible verse on a Post-It note and leave it on someone's car.
Are there any takeaways to get from Lent and Easter Sunday?
Lent is really a great time to re-examine our lives in hopes to identify unhealthy habits that ought to be cut out of our life. The small pain of missing a comfortable daily habit reminds us of the real hardships that Christ experienced and of everyone else who have faced trials and setbacks on account to their faith. One thing I have noticed is that if you stick to six consecutive weeks of something, chances are it's well on it's way to becoming a meaningful and healthy new habit.

MINT TO BE

I dream of the deep blue sea

Yesterday's weather in the QC was absolutely perfect! There was just the right amount of sunshine, with a bit of a breeze all throughout the day that had me dreaming of summer days spent by the ocean. Y'all, I am SO ready for this weather to be a solid 68-70 on a regular basis. Wouldn't that be ideal? I've caught myself counting down the days until I can spend afternoons curled up on outdoor furniture reading a book, wearing long flowy dresses and sporting some of my favorite wedges or sandals.  So what better way to take advantage of the b-e-autiful weather then doing just that (minus the long, flowy dress)?!
Not only did Will and I have a relaxing weekend (spent mostly at home, catching up over Mellow Mushroom pizza and watching countless episodes of Game of Thrones) but we also went to Flying Biscuit for breakfast with Will's sister Saturday morning, followed by getting my nails done with Caitlin and enjoyed a great sermon at church on Sunday with Allison and Will! What did you all get your precious selves into these past few days?!
